Local Roundup: Bulloch blasts Westminster, advances to region championship


    MILLEDGEVILLE — The Bulloch Academy Lady Gators continued their dominant season by advancing to the Region 4-IAAA tournament championship game with a 42-23 win Thursday against Westminster.
    Anna Newton was the high scorer for the Gators (24-3), finishing with 12 points.
    Chelsea Oglesby added eight.
    BA faces host John Milledge in the region title game today at 7 p.m.

Lady Jackets fall to Beach
    SAVANNAH — The Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets fell to Beach, 56-32, Thursday in the semifinals of the Region 1-AAA tournament.
    Jasmine Roberts and Philicia Batton each scored 10 points for SEB.
    The Jackets will face Tattnall County today at 4 p.m. in Savannah for the consolation game.
    The winner will earn the No. 3 seed in the GHSA Class AAA state playoffs.

Lady Gamecocks heading to state
    AUGUSTA — The Screven County Lady Gamecocks (9-14) knocked off East Laurens, 38-35, Wednesday to clinch a spot in the GHSA Class AA state playoffs.
    Screven jumped to a 22-8 half time lead and held off a late East Laurens rally.              Courtney Roberts and Portia Long had 12 points each. The Lady Gamecocks will play undefeated and tournament host Laney in the semifinals tonight at 7 p.m.

Claxton girls keep rolling
    MILLEN — The Claxton Lady Tigers (19-7) advanced to the semifinals of the Region 3-A tournament Thursday by knocking off Johnson County, 37-20, in Millen.
    Ikeria Brown led the Tigers with 17 points and Brianna Van Deursen dominated the glass and pulled down 20 rebounds.
    The Tigers square off tonight against Treutlen at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the region title game.
    Claxton will likely make the state playofs, even without an automatic bid, with its strong resume and its high rank in the Class A power poll.

Screven tennis tops SCPS
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County Gamecocks defeated Savannah Christian in tennis Thursday at home, with the boys and girls each claiming a 4-1 victory.
    Winners for the girls (1-0) were singles players Mallorie Boswell (6-1, 6-0) and Jancy Durrence (6-1, 6-0), and doubles teams Pamela Wooten and Kari Lane (6-1, 6-0) and Haley Jackson and Victoria Winters (6-1, 6-0).
    For the boys (1-0), Ryan Bazemore won his singles match, 6-2, 6-3, and SCPS forfeited the No. 3 singles game.
    Doubles teams of Clay Kirkland and Jacob Lariscy (6-4, 6-2) and Dylan Koch and Zachary Weaver (6-2, 6-0) were also winners.

GSU softball in FGCU tourney
    Georgia Southern softball ventures away from the friendly confines for the first time this season with an appearance in the Florida Gulf Coast  LaQuinta at the Airport Tournament.
    Play begins on Friday morning at 11:15 a.m. against Southern Illinois and continues later in the day against Wichita State.
    Saturday’s schedule features a doubleheader against Southern Illinois at 9 a.m., followed by a 3:45 p.m. contest against the top-ranked and defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. The weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against host Florida Gulf Coast.
    The Eagles opened the 2013 season last weekend with a 3-1 mark at the Eagle Round Robin. A 10-inning loss to St. John’s was the only blemish on the weekend which featured three victories in the circle for the defending SoCon Pitcher of the Year, Sarah Purvis.
    The junior netted SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors with a 1.11 ERA and 31 strikeouts. She fanned 14 batters in the season-opener which tied her for the seventh most in a single-game in program history.
    On the offensive side, Shelby Morrill hit .455 with a 5-for-11 performance at the plate.

SCHS track finishes 2nd
    SYLVANIA — Both the Screven County boys and girls teams finished second on Friday in a five-team meet that included Effingham County, South Effingham, Jenkins County and Savannah Christian.
    Effingham got both first-place finishes.
    First-place finishers for the Lady Gamecocks were Ralaya Evans (triple jump — 29-feet, 10-inches), Venisha Lawton (300 hurdles — 57.75 seconds and 100h — 0:18.13), Kaitlyn Skinner (discus — 96-feet, 10.75 inches) and Portia Robinson (400m — 1:08.16).
    First-place finishers for the boys were Bryce Johnson (shot put — 72'4"), Bobby Bangs (discus — 120'7"), Quan Smith (400m — 0:53.11) and the 4x100m-relay team of Josh Kerson, Jalen Davis, Smith and Terry Grace (0:44.94).
