MILLEN — The sixth-seeded Portal Lady Panthers shut down No. 4 Wheeler County, 33-27, Tuesday in the Region 3A-A tournmant.
The Panthers advance to face No. 1 seed Calvary Day today at 4 p.m.
Portal trailed, 24-7, at halftime, but Shianne Hagins scored 11 of her 15 pointsd in the second half. Portal's defens shut Wheeler County down to the tune of two points in the third quarter and five in the fourth.
Metter girls eliminated by Long
LYONS — No. 3 seed Long County eliminated the No. 5 Metter Lady Tigers, 22-20, Tuesday at the Region 2-AA Tournament at Toombs County.
Joniece Handson led the Tigers with eight points.
AAU hoops team holding tryouts
The Statesboro Swarm, an AAU girls travel basketball team, will hold tryouts on Saturday, March 2, at Bulloch Academy.
The tryout will take place at 10 a.m., for girls in grades 8 through 11.
GSU to hold 'Option U' Camp
Sessions to teach offensive and defensive concepts, featured speakers and two days with the Georgia Southern football coaches are part of the fourth-annual Option U Football Coaches Clinic, which runs Friday, April 5 through Saturday, April 6.
The Option U Clinic begins at the Parrish Football Center on Friday afternoon and ends after an Eagles’ Blue/White scrimmage Saturday at Paulson Stadium.
The cost of the Option U Clinic is $30 per coach in advance, $40 for day-of registration.
Coaches who want to learn more about the Option offense and 4-3 Defense will have the opportunity to spend time with the coaching staff of the only team to appear in three straight NCAA semifinals. Sessions include both presentations and chalk talks covering option concepts from under center and shotgun formation in addition to pass concepts and defensive coverages.
