Bulloch Academy splits with Westminster

Senior forward Forrest Spence crosses up the Westminister Academy defense in first half action.

The Bulloch Academy girls remained in the driver’s seat of GISA Region 4-AAA with a 46-25 thrashing of Westminster of Augusta Friday night.
Ashley Burke scored a game-high 18 points to keep the fourth-ranked Lady Gators undefeated in region play. Anna Newton netted 13 points and Chelsea Oglesby added in eight.
In the finale, the Gator guys kept battling and chipping away right up to the very end but the athletic Wildcats pulled away late with a 55-47 victory. WSA’s Joshua Jackson pumped in 24 points and Austen Stokes had 18. BA’s Forest Spence pushed the athletic envelope, netting 16 in a gutsy performance while Will Rushing added 16.
In the opener, the Lady Gators (19-3, 5-0) had a 10-2 run late in the first quarter to take a 14-6 lead at the buzzer.
Newton netted seven points in the second to lead the offensive charge. But it was guard Lauren Dennard, the shortest player on the floor, who dazzled by darting in and out to pick up rebounds on the defensive boards to take away WSA second-shot opportunities. Bulloch took a 27-15 lead at intermission.
Burke got hot in the third quarter, dropping nine points. Her three-ball with 4:13 to play gave BA a 36-17 lead. Danielle Atkinson’s trey gave the Lady Gators a 21-point advantage, 41-19, by the buzzer.
In the boys’ game, it was the three-point show in the first quarter as the Gators (10-9, 2-4) gave the Westminster (14-8, 5-1) all they wanted. Rushing dropped two from downtown and Spence added one in the quick and clean game. The Gators were only down by five, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter.
In the second, Jackson went off, displaying his strength and shooting prowess. But Spence’s hard-play on offense and Bulloch’s tight man defense kept the Gators close. Spence knotted the score at 24 with 1:17 left. WSA took a 28-26 halftime lead.
Amazing defense on both ends of the court was norm in the third quarter. But the Wildcats crept out to a seven-point lead, 40-33, at the horn.
Bulloch battled hard in the fourth, trimming a 10-point lead to four at one point. Chinese exchange student Ivan Chen scored six to help the Gators stay in the game. But WSA held off the frantic charge for the 12-point win.
In the earlier B-team boys’ game, Bulloch topped Westminster 39-36. Lanier Olliff led with 11 points while both Brett Thomas and Hunter Perry had nine each.
Bulloch travels to Bellville Tuesday to battle region rival Pinewood Christian Academy.
