Last Saturday, the Bulloch County Sheriff's office held its first Basic Civilian Handgun Course of the year. Many family members and couples attended together, and participants' ages ranged from 17 to 67.
The class, which is meant to educate people about handgun handling, safety and laws, is held at the Bulloch County Law Enforcement Training Center and consists of about an hour of classroom instruction, followed by active shooting at the range. It is taught by Bulloch County Sheriff's office Investigator Jim Riggs, Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson and sheriff's Sgt. Chelsea Morgan.
Riggs said interest in the course increased significantly following the  shootings in Newtown, Conn., and the ongoing discussion of gun control.
"We have seen an increase in folks wanting to become more familiar with their handguns, and we will have future classes as long as we have people interested," said Riggs.
The three-hour course costs $50. Each participant is expected to provide his or her own handgun, holster and 100 rounds of ammunition. The next class will be held Feb. 2, and there are plans to hold another in March.
Anyone interested in participating in a future Bulloch County Sheriff's Basic Civilian Handgun Course should contact Riggs at (912) 764-1763.
