Davidson tops GSU

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year

Sophia Aleksandravicius netted a season high 24 points and added 10 rebounds and eight blocks to lead Davidson to a 61-49 women’s basketball victory over Georgia Southern in the league opener for both teams.

MiMi DuBose matched her season high of 21 points to go along with a career-high seven rebounds for Georgia Southern (1-3, 0-1 SoCon). The junior guard was 8-of-14 from the floor and hit four of her seven 3-point tries.

The double-double was Aleksandracivius’ second in a row, third of the season and 33rd of her career. The senior was 10-of-22 from the floor and hit all four of her free-throw attempts.

Turnovers were the difference as Georgia Southern committed 27, which led to 25 points for the Wildcats (2-4, 1-0 SoCon).

Davidson led by as many 15 points three different times in the second period after taking a 30-21 lead into the break. Aleksandravicius twice gave the Wildcats its biggest lead of the game at 48-33 and 50-35 on turnaround jumpers at the 9:41 and 6:19 marks.

Dubose got the Eagles to within nine after a trey from the wing to make it 54-45 with 3:53 remaining, but sophomore Shannon Eriksson answer that triple with one of her own on the Wildcats’ next possession and the lead never went below 10 the rest of the way.
