Statesboro man charged with burglary, forgery of checks

A man broke into a Jeff Road home, stole a checkbook, and forged one of the checks a few days later, police said.
Monte Seabrooks, 22, Baldwin Street,  actually forged several of the checks, said Statesboro Police Capt. L. C. Williams. But  when he tried passing the last one at BB&T around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, someone called the police, and Advanced Patrol Officer J. Gawthrop responded, he said.
Seabrooks fled, but Gawthrop pursued him and caught him, placing him under arrest, he said. Seabrooks was charged with burglary, forgery, false statements and writings  and obstruction of officers before being taken to the Bulloch County Jail.
Det. Keith Holloway was assigned to the case, and after investigation, discovered evidence that Seabrook had burglarized a Jeff Road earlier this week, Williams said. "It was determined that  ... Seabrooks unlawfully entered the residence ... and took the checkbook. It was determined that Seabrooks forged several checks from the stolen checkbook and attempted to pass them at the BB&T bank."
Seabrooks also had a felony probation warrant from Henry County for a previous burglary, Williams said.
He is currently held in the Bulloch County Jail without bond, according to jail records.
