Police: Man texted teen with marriage proposal

Sean Alexander Mendoza

Statesboro police arrested a man Wednesday on charges he tried to lure a teenage girl with promises of marriage.
Sean Alexander Mendoza, 36, Plantation Pointe Drive, was charged with enticing a child for indecent purposes after texts to a 14-year-old girl were brought to law enforcement attention, said Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner.
The teen’s parents reported the incident Wednesday after having been notified by Statesboro High School officials of the correspondence between their daughter and Mendoza, he said.
“Detective Kevin Wadley of the Investigations Bureau began an investigation into the incident and conducted an interview with the juvenile,” he said. During the conversation, the girl told Wadley “Mendoza … tried on multiple attempts to get (her) to leave with him and go to unknown places and even discussed going to live in California and getting married and starting a family together.”
The teen also said Mendoza made other inappropriate comments to her, he said. “… Wadley also observed multiple text messages and emails between the juvenile and Mendoza that were inappropriate.”
After interviewing the victim, Wadley and Bulloch County Sheriff’s Deputy Doug Harrell arrested Mendoza at a residence in Bulloch County without incident, he said. Wadley and Statesboro Police Officer Matt Brinson then executed a search warrant at Medoza’s residence, and seized several “items of interest,” Turner said.
Mendoza is currently being held at the Bulloch County Jail pending further court action.  “This case is currently under active investigation, no further details are being released at this time,” he said.
Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to contact Wadley at the Statesboro Police Department (912) 764-9911 or to submit information to www.tipsoft.com.
Tips can also be sent via text  to “TIPSSPD” (plus the message) to 274637 (CRIMES). All information is strictly confidential, he said
