GSU students approve FBS fee

Majority also support stadium expansion, sustainability

Georgia Southern University took another step toward joining college football's highest level this week.
Students voted to approve new activity fees that will pay for the university's move to the Football Bowl Subdivision, $75 per semester, only if an FBS conference extends an invitation to Georgia Southern.
Dominique Quarles, the president of GSU's Student Government Association, announced to an exuberant crowd of students and faculty at the Russell Student Union Rotunda on Friday that 61.2 percent of students who voted supported the FBS move. Georgia Southern currently plays at the highest level in all NCAA sports except football, where the Eagles play in the second-highest level, the Football Championship Subdivision.
Students also approved a $25-per-semester fee to expand Allen E. Paulson Stadium by 6,300 seats (70.4 percent in favor) and a $10 semester fee (74.7 percent in favor) for sustainability initiatives. More than 55 percent of the 16,000 eligible students participated in the vote, which took place Tuesday through Thursday, Quarles said.
These fees will now be sent to the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents. The board must approve any new fees before they can be implemented.
Any fees that get approved would take effect beginning with the fall semester of the 2013-14 academic year.
