Mill Creek to hold July 4th activities and fireworks show

Fun, games and a dazzling fireworks display are all scheduled for the annual Firecracker Fest on Wednesday at Mill Creek Regional Park beginning at 4 p.m.
"The Firecracker Fest is a great event for people of all ages in our community," said Chad Averet, operations division manager for the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recretation Department. "We are happy to carry on this Statesboro tradition with the help of Sea Island Bank and our other sponsors."
The festivities kick off with amusement and inflatable games, a rock climbing wall and bungee jumping at Field 2. Beginning at 5:30, the baseball/softball skills contest, greased pole climb and popular frog jumping contest will start.
At 6 p.m., Statesboro Karate and the ATA Blackbelt Academy will be presenting community exhibitions while at 7 p.m., the Subway Sub Eating Contest will begin.
The Variations will provide musical entertainment until 7 p.m. Thirty minutes later, the Statesboro Blues Band will take the stage.
But the highlight of the night is always the annual fireworks display set to music. It will be simulcast on AM-1240.

Traffic plans
With thousands of people expected to attend the event, local law enforcement will be directing traffic in an effort to make it safer and easier to leave.
Those exiting from the main entrance of the park will be directed left onto Highway 24 and then straight to the bypass for access to Highways 80 and 301. People leaving from the back entrance of Mill Creek Park will turn right onto Brannen Road and then left onto Beasley Road to Highway 80.
Once all the cars from the park have exited, traffic from Mill Creek Elementary will be directed right onto Beasley Road to Highway 80. Cars parked at Bible Baptist Church, Trinity Church and Barnes Lumber will be directed right onto Highway 24 towards the bypass.
