Help wanted: City creates 3 full-time positions

The City of Statesboro has jobs to fill after a Tuesday morning City Council meeting resulted in the creation of new staff positions.
At the requests of two departments, council voted unanimously to bolster the city’s workforce by passing motions to add three full-time jobs in coming weeks.
The new posts include a pair of driving positions in yard-waste collection and another in the clerk’s office.
The need for additional yard-waste collection drivers arose last month when council approved  the purchase of a new knuckleboom trash-loader truck. Officials with the city’s sanitation department requested the new vehicle to more effectively manage trash collection, which had drawn some complaints.
New hires will be responsible for running the extra truck.
A new customer service clerk will be employed at City Hall to meet growing demand for records processing, City Clerk Sue Starling said.
The position restores a fourth clerk job that was eliminated about three years ago as a cost-cutting measure, she said.
“We have gone electronic, and that creates twice as much work. Even though a person is not standing in front of you, the order still has to be processed,” Starling said. “There is just as much paperwork and, sometimes, more. Also, seven out of 10 phone calls to City Hall go to our department. And our call time is longer, because people are requiring more attention — having to be talked through the online process.
“The fourth person will really make a difference,” she said.
There is no timetable in place for filling the positions. Money for the additional drivers was allocated in the fiscal 2013 budget and funds from the Water and Wastewater Department will support the new clerk.
Council will meet again at 6 p.m. Aug. 21.
