Beachy has partial tear in right elbow

Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy works the mound against the Baltimore Orioles in the first inning of a game Saturday in Atlanta. He has a partial tear in his right elbow.

NEW YORK — Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was detailing his team's latest loss Monday night, running down the list of what went wrong.
Then, very calmly, he added: "I have an announcement to make."
It was not good news for the Braves, either — right-handed pitcher Brandon Beachy has a partial tear in his elbow.
Gonzalez revealed the results of an MRI exam after Atlanta's 6-2 loss to the New York Yankees.
Gonzalez did not elaborate on the severity of the injury, and he said Beachy would see the team doctor before visiting noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., for a second opinion.
The 25-year-old Beachy is leading the majors with a 2.00 earned-run average. He is 5-5 in 13 starts in his first big league season.
Beachy was pulled from a start Saturday night and put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday.
Beachy had been hampered in the past by bone spurs and the Braves hoped this might be a similar problem.
But elbow tears often require Tommy John surgery and frequently sideline pitchers for at least a year.
On Tuesday, Gonzalez said team orthopedist Dr. Xavier Duralde confirmed the tear in Beachy's elbow. Beachy will see Andrews today.
Gonzalez said there is no word yet on how long Beachy will be out.
