An early Friday morning crash claimed the life of a Bryan County Deputy on Interstate 95 in Chatham County.

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Joel Mock, Deputy Robert Crapse, 32, of Ellabell, was killed just after 2 a.m. when his K-9 unit vehicle was struck head-on at mile marker 96 in Pooler.

Patricia Ann Collins, 23, of Richmond Hill, was traveling south in the northbound lane of I-95 when the collision occurred. Collins was flown by Life Star to Memorial University Medical Center, where she remains in serious condition. Alcohol is suspected, but the accident is still under investigation, Mock added.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Public Information Officer Julian Miller said Crapse was headed home from work when the accident occurred. Miller added that a second Bryan County deputy was behind Crapse and tried to get him out of the car.

Mock said the dog involved in the accident suffered minor injuries but will be fine.

Southside EMS, Savannah Fire Department, Pooler police, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and Bryan County responded to the accident.
