Dr. Lewis Holloway chosen as Bulloch superintendent

During a special called meeting Thursday evening, Bulloch County Board of Education members voted to appoint Dr. Lewis Holloway as Bulloch County's new school superintendent.
The current Clarke County school superintendent will assume his duties July 1, said BOE Chairman David Ball.
"We're very excited about the experience Dr. Holloway brings to our district," he said. "His background is an excellent  match for our system."
"I am very pleased and honored to be selected by the Bulloch County school board to serve as your superintendent," Holloway said late Thursday evening. "My wife and I are looking very forward to moving to the community, and we're going to be moving very quickly to get endorsed into the community."
Holloway said he plans to visit the area June 20-22.
Having served the past seven years as Clarke County's school superintendent, Holloway brings a total of 21 years experience with him, having also served as superintendent for seven years in Bentonville, Ark., three years in Sitka, Alaska,  and four years in Richton, Miss.
Before he became a superintendent, Holloway was a school principal, a headmaster and a math teacher.
The board approved Holloway's appointment with a seven-to-one vote, with board member Maurice Hill opposing the motion.
As superintendent of Clarke County schools, Holloway was responsible for an annual budget of over $120 million, a work force of over 2,000 employees, and a student population of over 12,000, Ball said.
Board member Edwin Hill said he feels Holloway will bring Bulloch County's school system to a new level.
"We have been known ... for being a great school system, and that will attract great people, such as Dr. Holloway, " he said.
"I think we've got a real good find in Dr. Holloway," said board member Kenny Stone. "He was by far the most experienced candidate, being a superintendent for 21 years in four systems. He brings a wealth of knowledge ... he's got the  talent and ability to take us to the next level."
After reviewing 22 candidates, "Dr. Holloway ... floated to the top," said Dr. Charles Bond, BOE vice chairman. "We hope he will move our school system to new heights of achievement."
Board member Susan Riley praised Holloway for having one of his schools recognized for being one of the top 1,000 schools in the nation, and said she feels he will be able to bring that kind of notoriety and achievement to Bulloch County schools.
Holloway has been married to wife Karen, a speech therapist, for 29 years. The couple has three adult sons.
In an earlier interview,  Holloway said he enjoys outdoor activities including jogging, playing golf, and racquet ball.  He also enjoys reading.
"Bulloch County is a great community offering a high quality of life ... (and) the school system has a history of high performing schools," he said in explanation of why he was interested in the position.  "The school board is professional, committed and supportive.  It would be an honor to serve in a community that embraces the importance of education evidenced by the high quality of board members elected to office. "
"Providing students with everything they need to obtain the highest quality education" will be a priority, he said in the previous interview. Also, he feels  "engaging parents and the community with high expectations for student achievement through high school into post secondary opportunities," is important.
Holloway earned his Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1979, his Master of Education degree  from Mississippi State University in 1976, and his Bachelor of science degree in Middle School Mathematics in 1974 from the University of Southern Mississippi.
In 2006, Holloway won the eSchool Tech-Savvy Superintendent Award and the National School Boards Association School District Technology Salute Award.
