You do not have to be a chicken-wing-connoisseur to appreciate a popular fundraising effort scheduled this week at Georgia Southern University.
      Though, it couldn't hurt.
The Kappa Delta Sorority at Georgia Southern will host "War of the Wings," its 29th annual Shamrock Event, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kappa Delta House on the university's Greek Row.
The event will allow students and the Statesboro community to taste and judge wings from a collection of local vendors, and enter contests for a chance to win several prizes.
And as is always the case, people participating in the wing-buffet will spend money to do more than just eat a meal.
"This event raises money for our philanthropy: Prevent Child Abuse America," said Brittany Hilburn, vice president of public relations for the Delta Lambda Chapter of Kappa Delta at GSU.
Prevent Child Abuse America is a nationwide public program to build awareness and implement efforts preventing the abuse and neglect of children on both the national and local levels.
"Eighty percent of the funds raised will go to the Bulloch County Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America," Hilburn said. "The other funds will go to the nationwide programs."
For the price of a $5 ticket, people attending Wednesday's War of the Wings may sample one wing from each of at least eight local restaurants - though, for judging purposes, vendors will be kept secret and wings distributed by Kappa Delta sorority members.
Each restaurant's wings will be marked by a toothpick sporting a different color ribbon, allowing tasters to place their favorite color into a bowl to be counted at dinners' end.
The vendor whose wings garner the most votes will be revealed and tabbed the "2012 King of The Wing," Hilburn said.
People attending may also purchase $1 raffle tickets for a chance to win an assortment of prizes, including gift cards from area businesses - Tantastic, Zaxby's, Barberitos, and La'Berry Frozen Yogurt Café, among others.
War of the Wings is the Kappa Delta Sorority's largest annual fundraising effort.
More than $6 million has been collected for Prevent Child Abuse America since 1983, when the sorority began a national effort to raise its funds.
Last year, nearly $10,000 was raised at Georgia Southern, and the local chapter hopes to make gains in 2012.
"This year we are trying to raise $13, 000," Hilburn said. "We will also accept donations at the event."
To purchase tickets for War of the Wings, individuals can contact Summerlyn Wells by emailing or visit Kappa Delta sorority sisters selling tickets on campus Tuesday.
Admission may also be paid for at the door Wednesday.
