Cobblestone to bring 186 new town homes to Statesboro

            When land is being cleared or construction begins on a commercial type building, I will usually get a call or blog from someone curious as to what is happening. I can say that I am very surprised that no one has contacted me about this.

            At the corner of Stockyard Road and the Miller Street Extension, 22 acres are being cleared for a new residential development. The land backs up to a local landmark of sorts - the pond and house that belonged to Charlie and Pat Robbins. Named the Robbins Nest by a group of investors that purchased the Robbins' house six years ago, the Robbins Nest now serves as a banquet and wedding facility.

            The acreage "across" and around the pond which adjoins the Robbins Nest is the area that is being developed by Lacey Construction based in North Augusta, South Carolina. Owner, Jeff Lacey, plans to build 186 town homes.

            The subdivision, named Cobblestone, will take two to three years to develop.

            "We have been looking in Statesboro for the last couple of years for a piece of property, and I think this one was a real sleeper," Lacey said. "It had the room that we needed, and you can see just how pretty it is as it slopes down toward the lake."

            Lacey said each town home unit will be 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and total 1,100 square feet. The price per unit will be around $90,000 dollars. He also said the development will have several common areas, including one around the lake.

            "I feel like this neighborhood will appeal to a number of different people," he said. "I see first time home buyers, single folks, and 'empty nesters' being interested in Cobblestone. We feel like it will be very successful."

            Lacey was complimentary of the city of Statesboro stating once the issues with the sewer were worked out, it has been "smooth sailing."

            "So far it has been a very pleasurable experience to work with the city," Lacey said. Construction on the subdivision should begin in the next 30 days. In case you are curious, Cobblestone will not be a gated community.
