Saddle Up Saint Jude trail ride to be held Saturday

Horseback riders will hit the trail Saturday as the Third Annual Saddle Up St. Jude Bulloch County benefit trail ride takes place. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the ride starts from Clark Farm at 10 a.m.
The ride costs $15 per rider and includes a meal, said Nancy Dipolito, who is helping coordinate the event.
Riders will enjoy trails through woodlands in Bulloch and Candler counties, local farmland and rural roads. A late lunch will be provided after the morning ride, and items donated by local businesses will be auctioned and raffled afterward.
All horses must have proof of a negative Coggins test and children must be accompanied by adults, she said. Riders must supply their own horses.
"We've had many inquiries about whether we provide horses for the ride," she said. "Unfortunately, we cannot do that."
All money raised will go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
St. Jude helps children suffering from serious diseases, said Holli Deal Bragg, ride coordinator. "They treat the children regardless of the family's ability to pay. If a family has no  insurance, they are never asked to pay for their child's treatment."
Recent releases from St. Jude give promise for children with eye cancer. " St. Jude researchers are working on a procedure that allows cancerous cells to 'commit suicide'," she said.  "Researchers are excited that this new discovery may not only help children with eye cancer, but may lead to successful treatment of other cancers in adults as well."
Riders may also further contribute to St. Jude by collecting pledges or sponsorships from relatives, friends or others. Prizes for collecting donations are cumulative, and riders can earn tee shirts, caps, back packs and more, depending upon the amount of  money they collect, she said.
Checks should be made out to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, she said. Monetary donations may also be sent to Holli Deal Bragg, Statesboro Herald, P. O. Box 888, Statesboro, Ga. 30458.
The Third Annual Saddle Up St. Jude Bulloch County ride is sponsored by the Statesboro Herald, and local businesses supporting the ride include Hemco, Wal-Mart, City Cafe, Pepper Jack's, Boyd's Barbecue, Pepsi, Ellis Meats, Passion Parties, Anderson General Store, Agri-Supply and more.
Strawberries are in season and will also be available at Clark Farms.
Clark Farms is located on Clark Farm Road three and a half miles from Portal off U.S. 80 West. After turning off U.S. 80 West onto Clark Farm Road, drive about a mile to the farm.
Riders coming from Metter will turn onto Hendricks Road off Portal-Metter Highway near the Bulloch County line; take the next right onto Perry road, which turns into Clark Farm Road at the county line.
