Go Red for Women luncheon scheduled

With heart disease the leading killer of women in the United States, the American Heart Association wanted to hold an event specifically focused to that segment of the population.
That event is the "Go Red for Women" campaign, which will be held at the Forest Heights Country Club on Thursday, May 10 beginning at noon with a testimonial from a heart disease survivor and a keynote address by an area physician.
Tickets for the event are $35 and can be purchased up until the event.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for the women of this community to come and receive valuable, life-saving information about the risks associated with heart disease and stroke," said Laura Thompson, division director for the American Heart Association.
Dr. Ajay Jain, a board certified cardiologist, will give the featured address at the luncheon.
Each year approximately 500,000 women die from cardiovascular disease with many not knowing the warning signs. Despite the fact it is the number one cause of death in women, less than 13 percent of women view the disease as a serious problem.
"We feel charged with an obligation to provide information and resources to the women of our country so they will be informed and encouraged to take better care of their health," said Thompson.
There will also be a "Red Purse Mystery Raffle" at the event in which three red handbags will be drawn for. Inside the bags will be gift certificates, jewelry, health and beauty supplies and other surprises.
Locally, the event is sponsored by East Georgia Regional Medical Center and supported by a variety of area businesses. Nationally, the Go Red for Women campaign is sponsored by Macy's.
