Fresh off a big 4-1 win over region foe Lakeside on Friday night, the Statesboro Blue Devils close out the regular season when they welcome Vidalia today at Mill Creek for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch on Senior Night.
Five Devils will be honored tonight, playing their final regular season home game in blue and white.
“We’ve got some guys that’s played a lot of baseball,” said SHS coach Chris Bishop. “We got the Lewis twins, and Forrest Robertson and Daniel Whitt and Grayson Wiggins. Aside from (Wiggins), all those have been in the program four years – played a lot of baseball for us. They’ve been dedicated and you won’t find a better group of kids.”
Wiggins joined the Devils after playing at Southeast Bulloch. The senior shortstop, who plans to play his collegiate ball at Louisville, said there’s been no chemistry issues with SHS.
“It’s been great,” said Wiggins. “When I came back it was like I never left. It’s been great.”
Bishop said his seniors will play tonight, but he’ll also get as many Devils playing time as possible with the Region 3-AAAA tournament beginning on Friday. The Blue Devils (11-8) finished in third place in the region’s North division and will travel to Brunswick on Friday.
“It’s definitely going to be emotional,” said Trent Lewis in regards to tonight’s contest. “It’s going to be tough.”
Trent picked up two clutch, two-out RBI in Friday’s win over Lakeside. His performance matched with that of senior pitched Forrest Robertson has the Devils looking like a tough draw heading into the region tourney.
“It’s going to be pretty emotional (tonight), probably,” said Robertson. “It’s our last time ever playing together (at home) – for most of us. It’s going to be a pretty big night and hopefully everything will go alright.”
Statesboro put a pounding on the Indians (8-13) on March 26, winning in Toombs County 9-0.
