GSU's Steve Cochrane signs with the Seattle Mariners

The Georgia Southern Baseball team's season ended with a trip to the NCAA Tournament but the players are still playing games over the summer in both collegiate summer leagues and the minor leagues. Eighteen members of the 2011 Southern Conference Tournament Championship team are active in the heat of July.
Joining those Eagles is Steve Cochrane, who was picked up by the Seattle Mariners today. Cochrane just wrapped up two seasons with Georgia Southern after transferring from Spartanburg Methodist. His father, Dave, played five years in the MLB and spent four of those seasons with the Mariners.
Two student-athletes, Victor Roache and Chris Beck, are playing their summer baseball in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the 2010 league champion Cotuit Kettleers. The sophomore duo is off to a great summer and is among the league leaders in their respective categories.
Roache is tied with two other players with four home runs and is leading the league with 16 RBIs and 17 walks. The outfielder is hitting .359 with 23 hits and five doubles, while Beck is sixth in the league with a 1.33 ERA and third with 24 punch outs. The pitcher has started four games and has allowed just four earned runs in 27.0 innings.
Three others, all drafted in the 2011 Amateur Draft, have started the climb to the major leagues. Andy Moye is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in three starts with the Helena Brewers, a Rookie-level team. The 15th-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers, Moye has allowed only one walk and struck out 16 batters in 14.0 innings. Matt Murray is playing for the Kansas City Royals Rookie League team the Burlington Royals and is 0-0 with a 4.73 ERA. Shawn Payne is currently in Short Class-A and is hitting .242 for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.
A pair of outfielders are hitting over .300 in their respective summer leagues. Arthur Owens is 11th in the Valley League with a .347 batting average, while Scooter Williams is hitting .350 with 13 walks for the Sun Belt League's Atlanta affiliate.
Colin Snow has made the farthest trip of any Eagle and is playing for the Anchorage Bucs in Alaska. Snow is 0-0 with a 1.08 ERA in six appearances with 12 strikeouts. Fellow pitcher Drew Johnson is 1-0 with a 4.40 ERA for the Luray Wranglers of the Valley League.
