Local Roundup - GSU's Roache to compete in CWS home run derby

    OMAHA, Neb. — Georgia Southern's Victor Roache has been selected to participate in the 2011 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby. The derby features eight of the nation's top college home run hitters and will be played at the site of the College World Series, TD Ameritrade Park.
    The home run derby is an elimination-style event and will take place this Saturday, July 2, at 7:30 p.m. The derby will be aired on tape delay by CBS on Sunday, July 3, at 2 p.m.
    Roache led the nation in home runs with 30 and set single-season records for Georgia Southern and the Southern Conference in the process.
    The Ypsilanti, Mich., native was the Southern Conference Player of the Year and has earned five All-American honors.

GSU hosting baseball camps
    Georgia Southern coach Rodney Hennon and the Eagles are hosting the Eagle Baseball Kids Day Camp July 11-14 at J.I. Clements Stadium.
    The camp will be open to children ages 6-12 and will run from 9 a.m. to noon daily.
    The camp will cost $130 and cover all baseball skill sets.

Overnight camp at J.I. Clements
    An overnight baseball camp for rising fifth graders through high school seniors will run at Georgia Southern from July 14-17.
    The camp is designed to provide instruction in all aspects of the game. Participants will receive instruction in hitting, defense, pitching/catching, base running and strategy. Campers will also participate in live and controlled scrimmaging.
    Players will have to opportunity expand their baseball skills and benefit from a unique, competitive and challenging atmosphere.
    Campers will be split into groups according to age and ability in order to provide the most relative instruction.

GSU Soccer Academy camps
    The Georgia Southern residential soccer camp, hosted by first-year GSU women's coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel, is scheduled for July 17-20 and is designed for girls ages 14 to 18 that are looking to play at the college level.
