SEB Jackets end regular season on a high note

BROOKLET — Southeast Bulloch ended its regular season schedule on a high note, pummeling Liberty County by a score of 13-3 in six innings Wednesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets scored five runs in the first inning and never trailed as they swept the Panthers in their season series.
Seth Morgan paced the SEB attack, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Aaron Rowe and Ryan Adams knocked in two runs each and Eli Page went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Wednesday’s win helped to get SEB back on track after a loss to Screven County Tuesday cost it a shot at the sub-region title.
“I think it was good to get back out there today,” said SEB coach Brandon Peterson. “We played a much better game and got back into a good rhythm.”
Errors keyed the Jackets’ early outburst as three Liberty County miscues were made in the bottom of the first.
Page led off with a single and advanced to third on an error following Taylor Burroughs’ grounder before coming in to score on a Morgan single. Another error put runners on second and third and Adams made the Panthers pay with a two-run double before crossing the plate to make it 5-0 on the final error of the inning.
“I think we swung the bats pretty well tonight,” said Peterson. “Jumping ahead early is always good. We missed some opportunities in the middle of the game, but got some more big hits in the final innings.”
Sam Wilson doubled for Liberty County in the second and came into score on an SEB error.
Patrick McDonald launched an RBI double and Antonio Smith lofted a sacrifice fly in the inning to bring Liberty within 5-3, but that was all the offense Yellow Jacket pitching allowed on the night.
Morgan, Burroughs, Gage Weaver and Tyler Epps all pitched effectively for SEB with Epps taking credit for the win.
“We wanted to get guys some work, but not too much work,” said Peterson. “I think everyone threw well and should be ready for the weekend.
Morgan recorded a sacrifice fly in the fourth to push the lead to 6-3 before SEB blew the game open — and ultimately forced an early end to the game — in the final two innings.
In the fifth Adams and Weaver led off with singles and another Liberty error on J.D. Smith’s sacrifice bunt attempt brought Adams in to score. Rowe followed with a two-run double and came in to score on a pair of wild pitches for a 10-3 SEB lead.
SEB finished off the Panthers in the sixth.
Two more singles to lead off the inning got the Jackets going and Weaver drove in Tyler Brown with a liner to right. With two runners on, the Panthers attempted to throw behind Corey McCullough at third, but the ball ricocheted off McCullough and into the Liberty dugout, allowing both runners to score and ending the game.
The Jackets now set their sights on the Region 3-AA playoffs.
SEB hosts Bleckley County in a best-of-three series beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at noon and continuing with a decisive third game — if necessary — Monday at 5:30 p.m.
