Athlete of the Week: Gates rewrites SEB books

Although she is only a sophomore, Breanna Gates has already left her mark on the Southeast Bulloch record books.
At last weekend’s Westover Relays, Gates set an SEB record in the 200-meter dash and ran the anchor leg of the record-setting 4x100 team.
“We just keep working hard every day,” said Gates. “Getting a record is nice, but we can always be a little bit faster. We can’t just stop here.”
Perhaps the only downside to Gates’ day was the fact that her record time of 25 seconds flat in the 200-meters was two tenths of a second slower than race winner Jade Perry of Monroe Comprehensive High School.
Gates got her revenge in the 4x100 as she teamed with Jerika Budgett, Nira Byrd and Dinesha Baker for a first place finish. Their time of 49.26 seconds set a new SEB standard and they needed every bit of that speed as Gates crossed the finish line just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Perheasha Perkins of Monroe.
Gates and the rest of the Jackets now set their sights on the Region 3-AA meet next week in Augusta. Field events and track preliminaries will be held Monday with the track finals following Tuesday.
