Eagles dive back into SoCon play

Georgia Southern is heading back into its comfort zone.
After another tough non-conference stretch — the Eagles (20-14, 9-3 Southern Conference) are 2-3 in the last five games outside the SoCon schedule — league play picks back up in Cullowhee, N.C. against Western Carolina.
The best news for GSU through the rough stretch was Victor Roache, who has been on fire ever since he was moved to the four hole in the batting order.
Roache has homered eight times in the last nine games, extending his season total to 15, and has upped his batting average to .326 in the span.
Unfortunately, home runs by Roach and Stryker Brown were the only offense in the Eagles’ 7-3 loss to North Florida Wednesday. The Eagles also suffered losses to Mercer and Marshall in the stretch.
Returning to SoCon play, where GSU has dropped only one series, a set on the road against Samford, will pit the Eagles against a struggling Western Carolina club (13-17, 4-11), which has lost seven of its last 10 ballgames.
“It’s another big weekend for us,” said GSU coach Rodney Hennon. “We’ve got to take care of our business. [The Catamounts have] kind of been fighting for their lives a little bit, so they’re going to be playing every game like it’s the last game. We’re going to have to bring better focus and concentration than what we brought out [on Wednesday].”
Both mid-week starters — Chris Beck and Josh Adams, who started Tuesday and Wednesday on pitch counts after the rain-shortened series last weekend at Marshall — are expected to return to their usual Friday and Saturday roles.
Sunday's starter has yet to be named, though Andy Moye took last week off.
Originally scheduled for 6 p.m. today, the game has been moved to 3 p.m. due to the threat of impending rain.
