BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets continued to roll, defeating Bryan County by a score of 10-2 Thursday night in a non-region matchup.
Seth Morgan tossed a complete game for the Yellow Jackets (12-5, 6-1 Region 3-AA), surrendering just a pair of runs and four hits while striking out four.
“Seth threw the ball very well tonight,” said SEB coach Brandon Peterson. “He threw a lot of strikes, got ahead of hitters, and threw a lot of ground ball outs for us.”
Morgan didn’t have to wait long for a lead as the Jackets jumped ahead in the bottom of the second inning.
Jay Cassidy began the rally with a leadoff single off of Redskin starter Matthew Herb and advanced to second when Blake Fulmer was hit by a pitch.
Ryan Adams grounded into a 6-4-3 double play for the first two outs of the inning, but Bradley Sullivan coaxed a walk from Herb and Aaron Rowe put SEB on the board with a two-run triple down the right field line.
Bryan County pulled even in the third when Ben Covington lined a two-out, two-run double to right center, but Morgan quickly regained control and allowed just one more runner as far as third base over the final four innings.
Morgan helped his own cause with an RBI double to put SEB up 3-2 after three innings, and the Jackets blew the game open in the fourth.
Eli Page singled between a pair of Redskin errors to load the bases with no outs and Tyler Epps singled home Rowe and Page for a 5-2 advantage.
An infield hit by Morgan plated another Yellow Jacket run before Cassidy capped off the big inning with a two-run single.
“The guys in the middle of our order had a good night,” said Peterson. “That’s why they’re hitting there. (Bryan County) made a few mistakes and we did a very good job of capitalizing on them and pushing some runs across the plate.”
Morgan pushed the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the fifth with his third RBI of the night — a sacrifice fly to center that scored Taylor Burroughs — and continued to sit down batter after batter on the mound.
Rowe capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single that scored Fulmer.
With Bryan County out of the way, SEB now returns to region play with major implications at stake.
Screven County defeated Swainsboro — which handed the Jackets their first region loss of the season earlier this week — Thursday night to pull even with SEB at 6-1 in sub-region play.
Both schools have already clinched home field advantage in the Region 3-AA playoffs, but the two old rivals will meet Tuesday in Brooklet with the sub-region title on the line.
Screven’s only sub-region defeat came at the hands of the Jackets April 1 in Sylvania when SEB overcame an early 7-4 deficit to pull away for a 10-7 win.
“It’s an important game, but it’s just like every other one,” said Peterson. “We don’t need to get too excited about it. If we just play our game and do all the little things right, hopefully things will work out for us.”
