Down in numbers, Eagles set for 2nd scrimmage

The numbers thin today when Georgia Southern has its second spring scrimmage at Paulson Stadium.
There will be only two quarterbacks, Jerick McKinnon and Jaybo Shaw, who will both be avoiding contact and wearing red jerseys.
There will be only two fullbacks taking snaps in Brent Thomas and walkon Terrell Jackson.
Slotback J.J. Wilcox has also been banged up, and offensively, about the only completely healthy groups have been receivers and linemen.
Defensively, Brent Russell, Dion DuBose, Josh Rowe, Darius Eubanks, Javonte Martin and Laron Scott won’t take any snaps.
Interestingly enough, the newly-installed shotgun looks may just help keep the momentum going throughout the spring, as the Eagles can ease out of their smash-mouth running game and ease back on the physicality for both sides.
“We’ll keep the scrimmages going and the spring game going by getting into those formations,” said GSU coach Jeff Monken. “The other thing is, we’re going to have just Jerick and Jaybo taking snaps, so we’re going to have to get in that formation to keep them healthy. It’s worrisome, but you’ve just got to deal with it.”
The offense will still get its practice in. Many of the fundamentals, especially for the running backs, stay the same no matter in which formation they’re lined up.
“We’ve gotten in this [shotgun] stuff to help our defense,” said Monken. “It’s easier to throw an A-back in there, have a couple of A-backs back there and just run the stuff and give them a look. We have to hold he card up for them sometimes, but it’s helping our defense. We’re still Ace blocking and scooping and arc blocking with those guys on the perimeter, so it reinforces the things we’re doing.”
This morning’s scrimmage begins with stretching at 9:45 a.m.
