Local Roundup: Lady Eagles set to resume SoCon play

    Georgia Southern resumes Southern Conference softball play on the road this weekend against Elon.
    The three-game series begins today with a 1 p.m. doubleheader and concludes with a single game on Sunday. The Eagles (21-21, 9-3 SoCon) are 6-2 against Elon (17-14, 2-7 SoCon) at East Field and lead the all-time series, 19-9.
    Marie Fogle was named SoCon Player of the Month for March after hitting .441 with seven home runs in the month. Overall, the junior outfielder leads the Eagles with a .382 batting average and leads the league with 13 home runs and 52 hits.
    Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week Allie Miles picked up her 10th win of the season on Tuesday against Kennesaw State. She went all seven innings and struck out seven batters to raise her season total to 112, which ranks second in the SoCon. In league games, she has a perfect 5-0 record with a 2.22 ERA and 34 strikeouts to lead the league in that category.
    Georgia Southern's next home series opens April 16 against Furman.

Screven sweeps SCPS
    The Screven Couty Gamecocks won 3-2 over Savannah Christian Friday in both boys and girls tennis action.
    The Lady Gamecocks (15-2) got wins from Kelsey Forehand (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) and doubles pairs Lauren Bazemore and Lauren Thomas (6-2, 6-3) and Evan Blackburn and Haley Mock (6-4, 6-0).
    For the boys (10-7), Chris Powell (6-1, 6-2) was a singles winner.
    Doubles pairs Matt Lariscy and Daniel Weaver (6-1, 7-6[7-5]) and Ryan Bazemore and Joe Thomas (6-3, 6-1) were victorious.
    Both Screven County and Southeast Bulloch will take part in the Region 3A-AA tournament Monday at the Fleming Tennis Complex in Augusta.
    Teams will stay in Augusta for the Region 3-AA tournament Tuesday-Thursday.

Gamecocks pound Laney
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County Gamecocks defeated Laney 12-2 in five innings Friday to improve to 6-10 overall and 4-1 in Region 3A-AA).

SoCon honors six Lady Eagles
    SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Six Georgia Southern student-athletes were honored Thursday as members of the Southern Conference Academic All-Conference team for the 2010-11 winter sports season.             Student-athletes representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions were named to the team. Five Eagle women’s basketball players made the list with junior guard Samantha Williams posting the highest grade point average with a 3.96 in accounting.
    Also named were  Meredyth Frye (3.61), RoRo Smith (3.76), Krista Tate (3.56) and Logan Youngblood (3.60), and track and field athlete Sara Curry (3.48).
    The 191 total SoCon academic honorees participated in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and wrestling. The average GPA was 3.55 on a 4.0 scale.
    To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the 2010-2011 winter campaigns. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

GSU set for final road trip
    The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team (9-7, 2-2 Southern Conference) closes out its two-week road trip in North Carolina this weekend against Appalachian State (12-5, 4-2 SoCon) and Elon (14-6, 6-1 SoCon). The Eagles travel to Boone, N.C., on today for a noon matchup against the Mountaineers before competing against the Phoenix on Sunday at 1 p.m.
    Georgia Southern closes out the regular season with a two-match homestand next weekend. The Eagles play host to College of Charleston Thursday at 2:30 p.m. before competing against Chattanooga in a noon matchup on Saturday, April 16.
