SHS girls also struggle offensively

Text Size: Small Large Medium
Lakeside’s speed and skill was too much for the Lady Blue Devils of Statesboro Tuesday night as the Lady Panthers beat SHS 4-0. Lakeside scored two goals in each half en route to the victory, spoiling Senior Night.
Chelsea Bates opened the onslaught for LHS with a goal in the 32nd minute when her and teammate Emily Wiles slipped behind the SHS defense. Statesboro keeper Christa Mitchell was lured out of the net and Bates chipped in her shot to make the score 1-0.
The Panthers added another goal 1:22 later when Anne Randall Hunter snuck behind the Devil defense and planted a strike into the top right corner of the net for a 2-0 halftime lead.
“We made two mistakes and then after that we put our heads down,” said SHS coach Andrew Hansen. “We did everything we needed to do for the first thirty minutes, then we left two girls unmarked and they scored two goals.”
Statesboro went without a shot on goal for the entire game and surrendered two more scores in the final 40 minutes.
Renee Redington banked a shot off Mitchell in the 50th minute to make the score 3-0. Laura Bonin broke away from her Statesboro defenders down the left side of the field, stopped on a dime and sent a cross to Redington who took care of the rest.
Elizabeth Pugh ended the scoring on the night in the 66th minute when she netted Lakeside’s fourth goal over the head of Mitchell.
The Lady Devils (2-5, Region 3-AAAA) hit the road Thursday, traveling to South Effingham for a 5:30 p.m. start.
