GSU Centennial Celebration planned

Georgia Southern officials hope the community centennial celebration will end with a bang.
Actually, they hope it ends with a lot of bangs as a fireworks display visible from Sweetheart Circle will culminate the three-hour celebration of the University's 100 years of higher education in Southeast Georgia.
The event is designed to get the community involved with the celebration of Georgia Southern and also to show the school's appreciation to Statesboro and Bulloch County for helping make the university what it is today, said Scottie Brown, Special Projects Assistant for Georgia Southern.
"We just want them to come out and celebrate with us," she said.
Among the activities planned for the event include free food and drinks, cake, GUS and the Georgia Southern cheerleaders, laser tag, face painting, a classic car show and snow.
Also, the university's museum will have a display chronicling 100 years of Georgia Southern while students and faculty will be dressed in period clothing and will read poems and play music from various decades.
The event concludes with a fireworks show at 8 p.m.
Melanie Mosley, director of campaign planning and assistant to the vice president, said the citizens of Statesboro and Bulloch County had a vision to bring the school to the area a century ago and that spirit still impacts the relationship today.
"I think Statesboro appreciates Georgia Southern being here and I think Georgia Southern appreciates Statesboro," she said.
Officials are expecting "a couple thousand" people to attend the event, with parking available at J.I. Clements Stadium, Hanner Fieldhouse and the College of Education parking lots. Southern Express, the school's transit system, will shuttle people from the College of Education parking lot to Sweetheart Circle throughout the evening.
