Richmond Hill sweeps SHS

Greyson Surges' goal off the hands of Statesboro keeper Jake Lanier in the 67th minute gave Richmond Hill a 1-0 win over SHS Saturday afternoon at Womack Field in non-region play. Surges' shot from 22 yards out tailed away from Lanier who was able to get two hands on the ball, but the backspin on the kick carried the shot over Lanier's head where it trickled into the corner of the net.
"Jake makes that save 99 times out of 100," said SHS head coach Chad Prosser. "We can't fault him, he's kept us in games we didn't deserve to be in."
Once Surges put Richmond Hill on top, Statesboro (4-5-1) quickly went to attack mode and had its best chance for an equalizer with 2:11 left to go in regulation.
Trent Doty sent a through ball to Thomas Eisenhart who split two defenders before being tripped in the box. The Blue Devils were awarded a penalty kick against reserve keeper Sam Vernon who entered the game halfway into the second half.
Ben Ellgass took the penalty, but Vernon guessed right, diving to his right to deny SHS any chances of a draw.
"We've had trouble with (finishing) all year," said Prosser. "To have them put one away and be able to finish and us not is real frustrating for us. I know it's frustrating for our guys who work so hard."
The two teams played virtually even soccer and missed countless scoring opportunities. Eisenhart headed a cross by Jack O'Malley in the fourth minute which was followed by Josh Biering's cross for Richmond Hill, also headed high and over the cross bar.
Mitch Doud found some room to work with in the 30th minute, but Lanier pushed his shot attempt over the bar to force a corner. The subsequent corner kick found its way onto the boot of Brian Adams but Lanier gobbled up another save.
The Wildcats almost got on the board in the 47th minute when Brian Wood sent a ball to Surges, pulling Lanier out of his net. Surges won the race to the ball and tapped a shot past Lanier, but the ball floated wide.

Lady Wildcats 2, Lady Blue Devils 1
Lauren Hall's goal from just outside the box gave Richmond Hill (10-1) a 2-1 win over the Lady Blue Devils of Statesboro Saturday, completing a 1-1 suspended match from Tuesday, Feb. 13.
Hall took a pass from Allison Snider after the SHS defense continously failed to clear the ball and slipped her shot inbetween a diving Christa Mitchell and the post for the eventual game winner.
"For that last bit, Richmond Hill was pressuring our backs, and when you pressure and don't let up you keep the ball in the other team's end," said SHS head coach Andrew Hansen.
The back line of defense for SHS (3-5-2), Brittany Hood, Ukachi Ugorji, Hunter Futch and Lauren Thomas did all they could to keep the Lady Wildcats at bay. Their offensive teammates, however, didn't prove to be much help.
"The other team has to realize that that's the hardest game they've ever had to play, and I don't think that's how Richmond Hill came off the field today," said Hansen. "We were doing things tactically well, but we weren't first to the ball today."
The Lady Blue Devils failed to register a shot on goal in 40 minutes of play.
Statesboro returns to action Tuesday for Senior Night at Womack Field against region-foe Lakeside. The girls will play at 5 p.m. with the boys to follow.
