Athlete of the Week: Lonon igniting No. 7 SCHS

Anyone associated with the Screven County girls basketball team over the last four seasons will undoubtedly remember the name Bria Lonon.
Now, the record books will do the same.
Having already eclipsed the career 1,000 point mark earlier in the season, the Lady Gamecocks’ senior forward can now boast of 1,000 rebounds to go with it. Lonon has been the driving force behind Screven this season and will need to keep contributing now that the postseason is here.
Lonon and the Gamecocks, which have been ranked in the CLass AA Top 10 most of the season, have steadily improved over the last few years and now — following the lead of Lonon and four other seniors — are poised to make their best run yet.
Screven has reached as high as No. 7 in the coaches poll and the Gamecocks clinched the No. 2 seed in this week’s Region 3-AA tournament and are looking to secure a top seed in the looming state playoffs.
“We’ve got a very good team and Bria is certainly a big part of that,” said Screven coach Roy Cooper. “We just need to stay focused. These are big games at the end of the season and we need to be at our best in all of them.”
