MACON — Bulloch Academy won its first-ever state trophy in wrestling, capturing second place in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) Class AAA state traditional wrestling tournament Saturday.

"This is our first major trophy at the state level," said BA head coach Andy Tomlin. "I couldn’t be more proud of the guys."

Bulloch had three individual state champions.

Freshman Mitchell Ball won his second consecutive state title at the 103-weight class. He won four consecutive matches, three by pins, for the title. Over the past two seasons, he has accumulated a 44-0 record.

Freshman Daniel Hendrix won the state championship in the 112-pound weight class. He also won four straight matches, all by pins, to win the championship. He went 25-1 during the year.

Junior Codi Johnson won the state championship in the 189-pound division. He also won four matches and had four pins during the tournament. He was 26-0 on the season with 23 pins.

Senior Blaine Lovett (130) and junior Caleb Bohannon (171) were state runners-up. Fifth-place finishers were freshman Eddie Howard (135), sophomore John Gowan (119) and sophomore Harrison Averitt (125). Junior Dillan Finch (152) was sixth.

"Overall, I think we wrestled well, said Tomlin. "This is the fourth time in four years that we have finished in the top 10 in Class AAA. That’s an accomplishment in itself. We lose three of 14 and gain four very talented eighth graders for next year’s roster. We return three state champions, a state runner-up, and a total of nine state placers. The future looks very bright."
