Local Roundup: Raymond leads Devils to victory

    EVANS — Statesboro High School defeated Lakeside, Evans 68-61 Friday night.
Jaqawn Raymond led the Blue Devils with 23 points and 20 rebounds.
    Evans was led by Trevor Foreman who scored 14 points.  
    SHS will travel to Effingham on Tuesday to face the Rebels at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Blue Devils top Lady Panthers
    EVANS — The Statesboro High School Lady Blue Devils defeated the Lakeside, Evans Lady Panthers 66-19 Friday night.
    Alisia Jenkins led the Devils with 13 points while Shaniwka Boie and Raven Thomas each scored 11 points.
    The Lady Blue Devils will travel to Effingham on Tuesday to face the Lady Rebels at 6 p.m.

Lady Tigers fall to Calvary Day
    SAVANNAH — The Claxton Lady Tigers (4-12, 2-5) fell to Calvary Day 71-39 on Friday night.
    Kelsey Ellis led Calvary with 30 points.
    Polly Murray led Claxton with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Shatasha Williams scored 10 points.
The Lady Tigers host Portal High School today at 6 p.m.

GSU's Zieziula wins career opener
    The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team opened its spring season with a 7-0 win over Fort Valley State at the Hanner Tennis Complex on a windy Friday afternoon. The Eagles returned to competition for the first time since the end of October, recording the first-career win for first-year coach Nick Zieziula.
    Sophomore Juan M. Puigventos defeated the Wildcats’ Brandon Pringle 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and paired with sophomore Matthijs Verdam to win at No. 1 doubles 8-0. Verdam won the No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-0, over Dwayne White. Freshman Marco Osorio made his debut for the Eagles and finished second, winning his No. 4 singles match, 6-2, 6-0.
    Wrapping up the competition for the Eagles, junior Alain Garrido won at No. singles, 6-2, 6-3, defeating Joshua Turner. Edio Castanhel picked up the fourth point for Georgia Southern with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Fort Valley State’s Byrone Scott. Thomas Bekkers and Kelvin Oliver battled to a 6-2, 6-3 decision for the Eagles sixth point.
    After its season opener at home, the Eagles take to the road to play at Georgia State Saturday, Feb. 5 and then at Kennesaw State the following Sunday.
