Inside Bulloch Business with Jan Moore - Belk plans expansion; Mall plans renovations

Jan Moore

I will be the first to admit that I really do love the Statesboro Mall. I don't care that the Georgia Southern student body fondly refers to it as the Statesboro Small, it is still the first large retail shopping development built in Statesboro, and for that reason, it remains near and dear to my heart.
Having said that, I must acknowledge that it needs a little work. Case in point, the facade on the front doesn't match the back. And, our beloved Belk could use a bit of updating.
Even though a formal announcement has not been made by Belk corporate or the owners of the mall, Augusta- based Hull Storey Gibson Companies, LLC, I do know that a new and improved Belk is on the way in conjunction with interior and exterior renovations of the mall itself.
Construction work on the expansion and remodeling of the Belk store will begin shortly and is scheduled to be done in October.
The store will be expanded by 25,000 square feet to a total size of nearly 97,000-square feet. The expansion is slated to go outward from the front, into the existing parking lot. In addition to the new expansion, I was told that an extensive remodeling of the current space also would occur. I have a feeling the work will require all of our collective patience, but the end result has got to be worth it.
I also was told it is one of only a few remodeling efforts to be done this year within the Belk chain of stores. Belk, Inc. is the nation's largest privately owned mainline department store company with more than 300 fashion department stores in 16 contiguous Southern states and sales totaling $3.5 billion in its past fiscal year.
Belk opened its first store in Statesboro in 1950, and relocated to its present location in 1970.
Overall mall renovations are slated to begin in a few short weeks with completion expected in the fall as well. We will bring you a comprehensive article regarding all of the renovations and the Belk expansion once plans have been finalized by Hull Storey Gibson Companies.
On another topic, some of you may have noticed that the "old" Burger King on Fair Road (also formerly - Bojangles Chicken, Michael's Deli, and a pizza/pasta buffet that slips my mind) is being painted to emerge soon as another restaurant concept.
I am pulling for something to work there. Nestled in between a very successful Burger King, Popeyes, and Dunkin Donuts, and down the road from the most successful Zaxby's in the chain, something should click. Maybe, this is it.
I will provide details as soon as I get them.
