Fun with the Family with Julie Lavender - Enjoy every day as 2011 begins

As the glow of Christmas lights fade and decorations find their way back to the attic, the calendar page flips over, announcing the dawn of a new year. What will the year 2011 hold for your family? Waste no time making treasured memories with family and friends. Roast marshmallows and take long walks. Bake homemade bread and climb trees. Try a new vegetable and watch for falling stars. Dance, sing, play, create. Make at least 365 special memories that will warm hearts and blanket your family with much love and happiness throughout the year.
Start the new year with ideas of your own, or try some of these wild and crazy holidays.
National Bean Day - Shop the shelves of the grocery store for a legume your family has never sampled. Find a recipe and cook together. While the beans are simmering, spoon dried beans into a child's sock. Sew the end closed or seal completely with a rubber band. Play a tossing game with the homemade beanbag or try to ring an empty box with a toss. After a delectable dinner, curl up on the couch with a copy of Jack and the Beanstalk before heading to bed.
New Friends Day - Make an effort to get to know someone better today, like the co-worker you barely know or the parent of one of your child's friends. Encourage your children to make a new friend at recess or dance or basketball. What a blessing to start off a new year with dear friends from the past and a few new ones, too.
Squirrel Appreciation Day - Spread a few nuts or breadcrumbs in your backyard for these precious critters. Sit on the porch and watch them forage for food and chase each other through the treetops. Take a walk in the woods and watch the squirrels play and scamper.
Blender Anniversary - In honor of the invention of the kitchen blender, whip up a Smoothie made with yogurt and fruit juice. Find a recipe online or create one of your own with favorite fruits
National Compliment Day - Decide to give lots of compliments to everyone in the family on this day. Make a point to compliment others on their appearance, kindness, attitude, work ethics, good grades, wise choices, clean rooms, and anything else you can think of to give accolades for!
Enjoy every day in 2011. Recognize each day as a chance to make amazing memories with those you love. Seize the opportunity to celebrate each day as a blessing from God, and, in return, use each day in the new year to be a blessing to others. Happy New Year!
