CES gets gift of reading

Claxton Elementary students were given the gift of reading this week, when they were allowed to pick a book of their choice as a Christmas present from administrators.

Media Specialist Phyllis Anthony and Stacy McGlashan, the school's instructional coach, oversaw the book give-away in a room where classes came one by one to peruse titles from classics like The Tale of Peter Rabbit to historical accounts like Man Walks on the Moon.

CES Principal Marty Todd and Assistant Principal Miriam Sands gave away over 1,000 books, one to each student throughout the book distribution.

Students were encouraged to browse through and find a book fitting their individual interests and reading levels, Anthony said.

They were very excited about their gifts, she said. Upon entering the room where they were surrounded by new books, some, unable to contain their joy, were jumping up and down, she said.

After considering dozens of choices, each student decided on a favorite before finding a corner of the floor to hunker down and dig into their new book.

Students set monthly reading goals, Anthony said, and keep a log of each book they've read.

They were encouraged to read their new book over Christmas break, Anthony said, so when they get back in January, they can add it to their book log and reading goal.
