Thanks for supporting Day of Great Thanksgiving

Editor:
With resources from churches, businesses and caring individuals the Old Savannah City Mission provided a total of 8,849 delicious smoked turkey dinners on Saturday, November 20, our Day of Great Thanksgiving.
It was incredible that on our first time in Statesboro 496 volunteers registered and served 2,025 meals.  Kudos Statesboro!  In Savannah, 1091 volunteers registered and served 6,824 dinners mostly in Forsyth Park.  In both cases dinners were delivered to shut-ins and folks who were not able to come to the event.
This event was more than just a dinner.  It occasioned “unity in the community” as all kinds of people from all kinds of churches and community based non-profits came together to share a meal, give thanks to God and do well to their friends and neighbors who are having a tough time.  I am so deeply grateful to all helped the Mission help those in need.  The Mission chooses not to accept taxpayer or United Way funding because of necessary restrictions on sharing of the Christian faith.    These limitations are understandable and appropriate.  I would not approve of my taxes or gifts to United Way to be used to propagate any religion.  The Mission depends entirely upon people who care about the less fortunate.  Because of their generosity, it serves provides emergency and other vital residential services 365 days a year.
