Cavs beat Jackets

BROOKLET — The Calvary Day Cavaliers’ soccer team (2-5-1, 1-2) traveled to Southeast Bulloch to take on the Yellow Jackets (2-1, 1-1), and SEB couldn’t hang on as the Cavaliers took home a 3-1 victory in a physical battle Thursday night.
The Jackets started the scoring early as they advanced the ball quickly down the field after taking control following the Calvary kickoff. Taylor Jennings took a pass from Wade Harrell and put it through in the second minute of the opening half.
The 1-0 lead did not last long, however, as Calvary quickly responded. Eddie Fisher launched a free kick in front of the goal and teammate Taylor Jennings tied the score as he headed Fischer’s kick into the goal.
The Jackets only managed four shots on goal in the first half, compared to the Cavalier’s
10, and were not quite able to build on the momentum from the first goal.
Calvary took the lead in the 23rd minute when Anderson Cope was able to capitalize on a rebound from his own missed attempt and get the team’s second score. Calvary took their 2-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Cavaliers had another scoring opportunity in the 46th minute when a hand-ball in the box gave them a penalty kick. Yellow Jacket keeper Corey Nettles faced off against Cavalier Ian Foster, and Foster fired a shot that Nettles was able to save as he dove to the left with his out-stretched arms.
“(It is Nettles’) first year playing goal for us,” said SEB coach David Quattlebaum.  “He’s very quick — he stopped that penalty kick and he made a lot of good saves. When you’re taking that many shots, some of them will get by, but he played a fantastic game.”
Although the Jackets were able to attempt five more shots in the second half, they were never able to close the gap.
“As we got going, (our offense) got better,” said Calvary coach Chad Griffin. “Their goal keeper did an outstanding job… He kept them in the game.”

Lady Cavaliers 6,
Lady Yellow Jackets, 0

The Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets (5-2-1, 2-1) never could get anything going on offense as they took on the Lady Cavaliers of Calvary Day (1-4, 1-2) Thursday night, and Calvary coasted to a 6-0 victory.
Cavalier corner kicks were the Achilles heel for SEB as Calvary was able to score four of their six goals after inbounding corner kicks. The Cavaliers first got on on the board when Sonny Canady hooked in a corner kick unassisted past the out-stretched arms of Southeast Bulloch keeper Kacey Jones in the ninth minute. Calvary was able to put two more on the board in the next 10 minutes with goals by Sara Hewitt and Canady’s second, giving the Cavaliers a 3-0 advantage.
Yellow Jacket coach Aimee Civalier had a decision to make, so she moved the team’s leading scorer — Morgan Jones — back to defense.
“They got three goals on us and they seemed to be dominating us on the field,” said
Civalier. “I just kind of wanted to stop the bleeding and that’s why I put her back there.”
After only attempting only one shot in the first half, the Yellow Jackets came out more aggressively in the second period. They were able to attempt four more shots in the second half, but none would get by.
Calvary added three more goals in the second — including Canady’s third — giving her a hat trick.
Jacket keeper Kacey Jones was pulled from the goal and placed on offense, but SEB never could get anything going and eventually fell 6-0.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Tuesday, travelling to Savannah Country Day.
