Dome goes up at Splash

The giant white dome went up Tuesday at Splash in the Boro, setting the stage for the numerous fall and winter programs offered at the aquatic center.
The dome, which covers both the competition pool and the therapy pool, is crucial to allowing Splash in the Boro to provide programs during the winter months.
"We get calls when we're closed for a week from people telling us they need to get into the water to help their arthritis and things like that," said Steve Brown, aquatics director for the facility.
While the water park is closed, Brown said there are several other programs being offered throughout the year, including water aerobics, swimming lessons, fitness swims and family recreational swimming and more.
"It also allows us to have a competitive swim team all year round," Brown said. "The dome gives them somewhere to practice and be in the water."
Splash in the Boro is closed all this week as the dome is installed and other preparations are made before it reopens on Monday.
With the cooler weather, there are fewer people taking the opportunity to go to Splash in the Boro, Brown said.
"During the summer, we average around 1,400 people a day. In the winter, it's about 40 people a day," Brown said.
The dome is expected to remain up until April before coming down, said Chad Avert, operation divisions manager for the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department.
The water park is scheduled to reopen the second week of May, 2007, Avert said.
