Fun with the family by Julie Lavender

Where will the wind take you in March?

The month of March may roar in like a lion or quietly whisper like a lamb. Whatever the weather, let the breezes stir your imagination and beckon you outside for fun with your family. Fly a kite, look for leprechauns and four-leaf-clovers, or soak up the sun – take in every beautiful day of March with those you love.
‰ Let’s Go Fly a Kite Month – Grab a kite and head outside on a windy day. Tie wishes written on bright paper on the tail of the kite and watch them head for the sky. Dance in the grass, just as the kite dances in the air. When the kite tires and day is almost done, watch Mary Poppins or read Lucky Song by Vera B. Williams or Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day by A.A. Milne.
‰ Shoe Week – Play a game outside with an extra pair of shoes for the hands. Have each player wear shoes on their hands and feet and race to the finish line. For an extra reminder of how blessed your family is, count all of the shoes in your house. Then consider making a donation to a needy child through
‰ National Noodle Month – Go to the grocery store and pick out a new shape of noodle, one you’ve never had before. Then make soup together with this recipe: In a large saucepan, combine one can of chicken broth, two cups of cold water, one-half cup of uncooked noodles, dash of celery salt, and one and a half cups chopped cooked chicken. Cook until noodles are done. Enjoy.
‰ Umbrella Day – Go for a walk on a warm, rainy day. Step over – (or in!) puddles and talk about past memories of rainy days.
‰ Newspaper in Education Week – As a family, look through today’s newspaper. Do you see anyone you recognize? Is there a funny article, a sad article, a new business in town? After perusing what’s available in the paper, make a list of fairly common words. Give each person a different day’s newspaper. Then have a scavenger hunt to see who can find the list of words the fastest. Or, see who can mix up words from the headlines to make the funniest, new headline.
Spend time with your family this month, and I promise you’ll find a pot of golden memories.
