Literacy workshop set for parents, families on Tuesday

SYLVANIA - A literacy workshop will be held for parents and families of Weaver's Play & Learn pre-kindergarten students on Tuesday beginning at 5:15 p.m. at the pre-school and day care facility on Curtis Street in Sylvania.
Kathryn Youles, assistant director of the Screven-Jenkins Regional Library, will be a guest speaker discussing the importance of literacy and informing families of the programs the library has to offer. Another guest representing Ogeechee Technical College will discuss opportunities for parents, such as earning a GED and other courses available to them.
The Georgia government-funded lottery pre-K program Bright from the Start served its 1,000,000th child in the 2009-2010 school year, said Teresa Weaver, director of Weaver's Play & Learn. She said the workshop will help honor that accomplishment, where families in attendance will receive a special gift from Gov. Sonny Perdue and his wife Mary.
Weaver's Play & Learn accommodates 60 children with three classes of pre-K students, Weaver said.
"Although parents are the first and best teachers in their child's life," Weaver said, "I believe pre-K is the most important year of a child's school career."
Pre-K is usually the child's first experience of education outside the home, she said, and this experience helps instill in them the attitude they will have toward education for the rest of their lives.
