Hospital to host Community Health Fair Saturday

More than 30 area health businesses and agencies will provide free screenings as well as information on leading a healthier lifestyle.
The community health fair at East Georgia Regional Medical Center is set for 8-11 a.m. Saturday. The event offers an opportunity for community members to learn more about steps they can take to lead healthier lives, said Donna Whitt, director of education at EGRMC and the fair's director.
"So many of us are not aware of heal health numbers and often do not address them until we find ourselves in an urgent health crisis," Whitt said. "Many disease process can be successfully managed if we identify them early and make lifestyle changes necessary to improve them."
In addition to East Georgia Regional Medical Center, Georgia Southern's College of Health and Human Services is co-sponsoring the event.
Among the free screenings and tests offered will be cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose, prostate cancer, flexibility and balance assessment, diabetic foot screenings, hemoglobin and bone density.
"Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose level and weight and initiating lifestyle changes to address them is a wonderful start. These health status numbers talk, but only if you give them a voice," Whitt said.
New to the fair this year will be short presentations from local physicians on a variety of topics and a question and answer session following. Topics scheduled to be covered include osteoporosis, hormone replacement therapy, how to recognize a heart attack, colon cancer, heart disease and women, and saving your sight: glaucoma, cataracts and diabetes.
Whitt said it's important for people to be informed about the health issues that may affect them.
"We want to provide them with the knowledge and tools that will increase their efforts to focus on the benefits of being informed about their health," she said.
Those attending the fair are asked to park in the medical office parking area of the hospital so as not to inconvenience those who are visiting family or friends who are patients. People attending the fair should enter at the visitors entrance, located near the flagpole, where a registration table and maps will be located.
For more information on the fair, contact Whitt at (912) 486-1132.
