Local Roundup - Eagles roll to a 4-0 win over Winthrop

Bulloch Academy cross country runner Will Johnson paces himself to a first-place finish Saturday in Martinez at the Augusta Prep Invitational.

    The Georgia Southern Men’s Soccer team was in control from start to finish in a 4-0 victory over Winthrop Sunday at Eagle Field.
    The Eagles’ defense didn’t give up a single shot on goal, holding Winthrop to just five shots, all in the second half. Three of those shots came on free kicks.
    The offense was equally impressive in the match, scoring three goals in the final six minutes after Jon Cox scored what proved to be the game winner in the 30th minute. Cox received the ball at the top of the 18-yard box from Muhamed Sidibeh. Hunter Norton was also credited with an assist on the play, hitting Sidibeh on a run to the left corner.
    Georgia Southern improved to 3-2-1 on the season, while Winthrop fell to 2-4-0.
    Cox scored his second goal of the game in nearly the same spot on the opposite end of the field. He found the ball at his feet of a deflection, and blasted it to the right post in the 90th minute to push the score to 4-0.
    Ethan LaPan scored his second goal of the season in the 85th minute to give Georgia Southern a 2-0 advantage. Cox stood over the ball 35 yards in front of the goal on a free kick, and LaPan ran to the left post, received the pass from Cox, and beat Winthrop goalkeeper, Enrique Miranda, for the goal.
    The Eagles open Southern Conference play in their next match, taking on Furman on Wednesday at Eagle Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Lady Eagles top CCU
    Sara Oland scored her fourth goal of the season to lead the Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina Sunday at Eagle Field.
    With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-4-0 on the season, while the Chanticleers fell to 4-5-0.
    The Eagles open Southern Conference play in their next match, taking on Wofford on Friday, Sept. 24, at Eagle Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

GSU pair takes doubles title
    On the final day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic, the Georgia Southern Women’s Tennis tandem of Ali Beavers  and Paolo Garrido captured the ‘A’ doubles title.
    Beavers and Garrido teamed up to cruise through three rounds of doubles action to reach the final on Sunday. The pair faced off against Campbell’s Lisa Sutton and Borislava Nikolova, defeating the Camels, 8-6 to capture the title. The title was the first for newcomer Garrido.
    Georgia Southern will return to the courts with the SpringHill Suites Invitational, October 15-17. Mercer, South Carolina State and Western Carolina will travel to Statesboro for the three-day tournament.

BA’s Johnson wins AP Invitational
    MARTINEZ — Bulloch Academy senior Will Johnson clocked an 18:41.37 to win the varsity boys’ race in the Augusta Prep Invitational Saturday.
    Johnson led the Gator squad to a fourth-place finish in the meet. Fellow senior Haze Smith finished 15th in the 49-runner race with a 20:39.36. Freshman Chris Williams finished 22nd with a 21:49.01
    The Bulloch Academy girls finished second in the varsity girls’ meet. Eighth grader Ashley Burke led the Lady Gators in the 3.2-mile run, clocking a 22:47.08 for sixth place. Fellow eighth grader Pate Lomax was seventh in the 40-runner race with a 22:47.24 and junior Emily Morgan was 10th with a 23:30.87. Junior Maddie Manack was 16th (25:37) and freshman Annsley Lomax was 18th (25:41).
    Will Bowen was the highest finisher in the junior varsity boys’ 2.1-mile race, finishing 14th out of 51 runners with a 15:36. Oliver Cope was 17th (15:56) and Preston Rincon-Nevil was 19th (16:01).
    Tatum Blitch led the junior varsity girls, finishing ninth in the 33-runner race. Abi Morgan was 16th (18:29).
