Lady Gators fall to Brentwood in doubleheader

It was a bad day on the ball field as the Bulloch Academy Lady Gators committed more misques than they scored runs in a doubleheader loss to Class AA powerhouse Brentwood Saturday.

BA had 15 errors in the 11-4 and 11-5 losses, but the improbable thing was that the Lady Gators were in both games and had their chances to win until the latter innings.

In the first game, the Lady Gators trailed 7-4 through six innings but Brentwood scored four in the top of the seventh to dash the spirits of the BA girls. In the second game, the Lady Eagles had just a 2-1 lead through four innings. But nine runs in the final three innings put the game on ice.

Even though the Lady Gators helped Brentwood via the errors, the Lady Eagles helped their own cause in both contests, pounding out 26 hits in the double-dip. Morgan Cook led Brentwood with seven hits on the day. Both Emily Chapman and Brook Hinton had four each and Jacey Hinton had three.

The Lady Gators had 12 hits on the day, six in the first and six in the second game. Taylor Collins and Marianna Peebles had three each, Mary Margaret Reeves added two and Ally Cheshire, Caitlin Barber, Maddie Marsh and Madison Poole had one each. BA's Madelyn Vickery was tagged with the Game One loss while Lauren Dennard got the Game Two loss.

In the opener, Brentwood (17-7) scored three runs in the first, two in the second and one in both the third and fourth. Bulloch committed one error in the first inning, three in the second and two in the fourth to help the visitors from Sandersville.

But the Lady Gators (11-5) came right back, pushing one across in the first, two in the second and three in the third. The Lady Eagles weren't immune to the error bug either as they committed five in the first game to help BA keep close.

Brentwood scored four runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

In the finale, Brentwood got on the board with two runs in the top of the third on three hits and two BA mistakes. Bulloch cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when Peebles beat out an infield hit, stole second and third and raced home on a wild pitch.

With two outs in the fifth, another BA errors allowed Brentwood new life and they took advantage of it, scoring two runs on two hits for a 4-1 lead.

Bulloch scratched out another run in the bottom of the inning when Mary Margaret Reeves walked, stole both second and third and scores on a wild pitch.

In the sixth, Brentwood hits were almost as numerous as the rain drops which fell in the inning as the Eagles scored five runs on five hits and three errors for a 9-2 lead.

     The Gators couldn't recover.

Bulloch travels to Lyons Monday to battle Robert Toombs Christian Academy, to Bellville Tuesday to take on Region 4-AAA foe Pinewood and hosts region opponent Trinity Christian School on Thursday.
