Local Roundup - Screven 'Burns' Swainsboro

    SWAINSBORO — Tiffany Burns was one hit away from the cycle, and it was the easy one.
    Burns (3-for-3) hit a homer, a triple and a double and drove in six runs as Screven County (16-1) took down Swainsboro 13-0 in four innings on the road Thursday.
    Marla Thompson (3 IP, 5 K) and Dawn Stewart combined to pitch the shutout.
    Lauren Thomas homered in the game, and Sydnee Weaver went 3-for-3 with a triple.
    The Lady Gamecocks return to action Tuesday when they host Jefferson County at 5 p.m.

Jackets roll past Statesboro
    Visiting Southeast Bulloch saw Hannah Denmark (3-for-4) and Effie Manahan (2-for-2) combine for five runs and eight RBIs as The Lady Yellow Jackets (9-5, 2-2 Region 3B-AA) took down Statesboro 12-4 in five innings Thursday.
    Taylor Wilkes pitched the final three innings, striking out five and allowing one earned run.
    Nira Byrd (2-for-3) drove in three runs to round out the SEB attack.
    The Jackets return to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday when they host Laney in a region matchup.
Johnson tops Portal
    PORTAL — Boshna Williams went 2-for-3, and Megan Moore, Megan Anderson and Brionna Flood got hits, but Johnson County defeated Portal 9-1 Thursday at Panther Field.
    It doesn't get any easier next week for the Lady Panthers, as they travel for 6 p.m. games at Treutlen Tuesday, Wheeler Wednesday and host Wheeler Thursday.

Lady Eagles ready for weekend
    The Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer team will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Tennessee Tech on Frida at 5:30 p.m. and Kennesaw State on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
    The Eagles enter the tournament with a 2-2 record after battling for a 3-2 win over Charleston Southern at home on Sunday, Sept. 5. Sara Oland scored her team-high second goal of the season in the win, while Kyrstin Smithand Elena Karakizis found the back of the net for the first time this season.

GSU heads to High Point tourney
    The Georgia Southern Eagles travel to High Point, N.C., this weekend for the Flash Gordon Soccer Tournament. Georgia Southern will face host High Point today at 7 p.m. and conclude the tournament against Radford on Sunday at 1 p.m.
    Georgia Southern comes into the tournament with a 1-1-0 record after falling to Jacksonville 2-1 in overtime Tuesday, Sept. 7. Four players have combined to score five goals for the Eagles in just two games this season, led by Witt Carlisle with a pair of goals against USC Upstate. Freshman Hunter Norton joined the list, scoring a goal in the first half against Jacksonville.

Carter named to USWAMCT team
    MIAMI, Fla. – Former associate director of athletics and Georgia Southern Hall of Fame member Brenda Carter has been selected to join the United States Women’s Alice Marble Cup Tennis team. This will be the ninth year she has represented the United States on a Senior International Tennis team.
    The United States Tennis Association (USTA) selected the team which will compete in the prestigious International Federation Super Seniors World Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey, beginning October 11.
