Local Roundup - GSU cross country gets underway


    The Georgia Southern Cross Country team begins its 2010 season with a trip to Hilton Field at Fort Jackson, S.C., for the Gamecock Invitational on Friday. 
    The Eagles will send a full squad to the 5K meet which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The race consists of three loops around the course. Georgia Southern finished fourth in last year’s meet with host South Carolina taking the team win.

BA track, tennis champs honored
    The Bulloch Academy 2010 girls’ tennis and track and field state championship teams will be honored at halftime of the BA-Robert Toombs Christian Academy football game on September 3 at Gator Alley.
    State championship rings will be presented during the event.
    Last Spring, the girls’ tennis team blew through its competition at the Class AA team tennis tournament at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta to win the school’s first girls’ state championship since 1998. Likewise, the Lady Gator track and field squad overwhelmed the competition at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany to win its second consecutive title.  

Gators place in Top 10
    MACON — Bulloch Academy competed in its first Class AAA cross country meet of the season Saturday and all four teams finished in the top 10 after completing the hilly course at Wesleyan College.
    The varsity girls were fifth, the varsity boys and junior varsity girls were seventh respectively and the junior varsity boys were ninth. Mount de Sales won both the boys’ and girls’ varsity meets.
    The highest individual BA finisher was eighth grader Ashley Burke, who clocked a 22:51 on the 3.2-mile course for fifth place among 120 runners in the girls’ varsity meet. Junior Emily Morgan was 26th (25:43) and classmate Maddie Manack was 35th (26:42).
    In the boys’ varsity meet, BA senior Will Johnson was 10th in the 130-runner race, breaking the line with a 19:15. Classmate Haze Smith was 30th with a 21:44 and freshman Chris Williams was 60th with a 23:17.
    In junior varsity girls’ action, the highest BA finishers on the 1.6-mile course were Hannah Dasher (12:33), Abi Morgan (12:38), Cate Williams (12:48) and JoBeth Hendrix (12:50). In junior varsity boys’ action, Oliver Cope led the Gators with an 11:28, followed by Garrett Williams (11:54), Will Bowen (12:28) and Preston Nevil-Rincon (12:29).

Navy travel available for GSU students
The Georgia Southern Office of Student Activities is offering its first football travel package of the season for the Georgia Southern-Navy game in Annapolis, Md. The Eagles and Midshipmen meet for the first time ever on Saturday, September 11, and students are invited to travel to the first away game.
    The package, which includes a ticket to the game, a round-trip bus ride and a hotel stay at Aloft BWI Hotel, has two options.
    Selecting the hotel option with two queen beds is $58 or the other option is $83 for a room with one king bed.
    Buses will depart from the Russell Union Student Center on Friday, September 10th at 10:00p.m. and leave Annapolis for the return to Statesboro on Sunday morning.
    The travel packages can be purchased in the Office of Student Activities in the Russell Union Student Center and also online at www.gsustore.com.
