Lady Devils hope to catch Westlake offguard

Text Size: Small Large Medium
The Statesboro Lady Blue Devils are hoping to catch Westlake at the right time.
The Lady Lions breezed through their region 2-AAAA regular season schedule, going a perfect 18-0. But in the final four of the region 2-AAAA tournament, WHS (24-3) squeaked by Starr’s Mill then was upset in the championship game by Fayette County.
“They might be feeling like their team’s not as good as what they thought,” said SHS head coach Jeff Seier. “We hope that’s the case. We think we have a shot to beat them, but we’re going to have to play well.”
Led by 6-foot-1 forward Tamika Willis, the Wildcats are a post-oriented team that likes to set up in their halfcourt offense. Willis, a sophomore, is averaging a double-double.
Statesboro is coming off a 50-43 win over Effingham County in the consolation game of the region 3-AAAA tournament. Monnette Bennett scored 36 in the win for SHS, who comes into today’s action as a No. 3 seed.
Seier said he was really proud of the Effingham win, considering one night before the Lady Devils were beaten 61-36 at the hands of Greenbrier, a game that was never in question. Statesboro (17-10) returned to Bulloch County at midnight after the loss, then had to depart at 10 a.m. that same morning to face ECHS.
Riding that momentum and hoping that Westlake is on a bit of a down swing, Seier said it’s up to his girls to do what they do best.
“We don’t have any film on them so we’re really going by scouting reports,” said Seier. “At this time of the year you kind of do what you do best and hope it’s better than what they do best. We’re certainly going to try to come out and press and make the game fast.”
Statesboro will depart from town Friday at 10 a.m. for Friday’s 6 p.m. tip.
