Screven teams draw Long County

After stumbling during the region playoffs, the Screven County Lady Gamecocks are back for a second year in a row to compete for a state championship in region 3-AA. This time, they intend to get the job done.
Since taking over the team four years ago, Lady Gamecock coach Jennifer Acree has brought the team a long way. After setting many individual and team records, the SCHS ladies look to finish what they started last season, when they lost in the state title game.
Coming up short in this year’s region tournament — falling to region champion Laney — has taught the Lady gamecocks some valuable lessons.
“Laney is a great team,” said Acree. “They have proven that throughout the year, and we just didn’t come ready to play. We are well aware that if we play like that again, we probably won’t advance to the next round. We’ve just got to keep that in mind and play four quarters.”
Screven begins the road to the state championship game on Friday when they take on the Blue Tide of Long County on their home court in Screven. The No. 2 seed from region 3, SCHS is confident going in.
“I’ve got a couple of tapes on (Long Co.). They are not very deep. They play a 1-2-2 zone, so we’ll look to push the ball on them. I’m not going to change much…We’ve won 23 games so far — that tells us we’ve been doing a few things right.”
Should the Lady Gamecocks handle the Tide, they will play the winner of the Dodge County/Cook game Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m. at the Albany Civic Center. Acree remains optimistic about the teams on Screven’s side of the bracket.
“I feel a whole lot better than I did last year,” she said. “I am upset that we did not win our region, but we probably fell in a better bracket than we would have if we did win region. If I had to pick, I would defiantly choose a state championship over winning region. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.”

Gamecocks travel to Ludowici
The Screven County Gamecocks will enter the state playoffs as the No. 3 seed from region 3-AA, and will approach the playoffs carrying a bit of momentum.
After falling to Swainsboro in a tough six point loss, the Gamecocks bounced back and won the consolation game against Westside to make the state playoff field. The win advanced SCHS’s record to 15-13, and gave the team some confidence heading into the first round.
“It was a really solid win for us,” said Gamecock coach Arthur Davis. “We feel good about it and we are happy to make the state tournament.”
The Gamecocks will be traveling to Long County for a first-round match up with the Blue Tide on Saturday.
“We exchanged some tape (with Long County) to find out about them,” said Davis. “They are a very athletic team.”
Coming off a huge game against Westside, the Gamecocks will look toward Dajuwan Carter and Antrjuan Albright for leadership going into the first round. They have both been hot so far during the playoffs. In the win against Westside, Carter put up a double-double, scoring 27 points and added 12 rebounds.
If Screven can knock off Long County in the first round, they will head to the Albany Civic Center to take on the winner of the Randolph Clay/Tattnall County game on Saturday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m.
