Bulloch County was selected to receive $27,005 in federal funds to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs.
The grant, distributed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is for local governmental, volunteer or non-profit organizations. The application deadline for the grant is Wednesday, February 28 at 4 p.m.
A local board consisting of representatives from the Department of Family and Children's Services, the United Way and and other agencies will meet to review the applications and determine how the grant money will be distributed, said Mary Phillips, coordinator for Concerted Services said.
"We expect places like the Food Bank, Amethyst Project and battered women's shelter to apply and organizations like that," she said.
Following the application, organizations seeking a portion of the grant will be asked to give a presentation in front of the board explaining the reason they believe they need the grants, Phillips said.
To be eligible for the grant, organizations must meet the following five criteria: be non-profit; have an accounting system and conduct an annual audit; practice nondiscrimination; demonstrated the ability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and if they are a private volunteer organization, it must have a voluntary board.
Applications are available at the Concerted Services office at 515 Denmark Street or by calling Phillips at (912) 489-1604.
