Will Powell’s 24 point effort in Friday’s semifinal win over Frederica and five point output Saturday against Trinity Christian helped give Bulloch Academy its first region championship in basketball since 1992.
“I just think we were more disciplined than teams in the past,” said Powell. “With the the new coach (Chandler Dennard), we had more discipline and this is a good group of guys.”
Powell was named to the All Region team for the second consecutive year. He made three 3-pointers in Friday’s 24-point outburst.
“I was on fire,” said Powell. “So I just kept shooting.”
Powell and the Gators will travel to Middle Georgia College on Thursday to face Heritage in the first round of the GISA state tournament at 8:30 p.m.
“We have to keep rebounding and keep playing good defense,” said the 5-foot-11 junior, of BA’s chances of a state title. “We have to just keep doing what we’ve been doing.”

Morgan Jones
Morgan Jones has had a roller coaster couple of weeks recently.
She went through knee surgery in December, signed on to play Division I soccer with Presbyterian College less than two weeks ago and in the of the second half against Screven County on Thursday, sailed a free kick over the heads of the defensive wall and notched her first hat trick of the season, giving Southeast Bulloch a 5-0 win.
Jones has tallied four goals in two games this season and said she’s excited about joining the Blue Hose in Clinton, S.C. in the fall. But first, Jones is concentrating on the Lady Jackets 2007 run.
“I think we can go as far as we want to go,” said the 5-foot-6 senior. She also added her favorite part about soccer is the athletic ability it takes to play the sport.
Jones and Southeast will return to the pitch Thursday when they host Toombs County for a 6 p.m. start at Fred Shaver Field.
