OTC hosts Black Heritage Luncheon

Guests at Ogeechee Technical College's annual "Celebrating Black Heritage" luncheon were treated to the musical stylings of Jacquelyn Hamilton and the musical group The Wardlaw Brothers as the event celebrated the impact of African-American musicians on the culture of the United States.
    Charlene Lamar, vice-president of student services, said the committee that organizes the event decided this year they wanted to focus on the impact music has on society and
    "They came up with something slightly different this year with the music rather than sticking with the traditional speaker and I think that everyone enjoyed it," Lamar said. "A lot of times we can the message across through music rather than though simple words."
    Hamilton said performing at Ogeechee Technical College's Black Heritage luncheon was really the culmination of all she went to school for.
    "This is a wonderful experience," she said. "To walk in those footsteps that were tread by your great opera singers and your great jazz singers means a lot to me."
    She said it meant a lot to her to be able to pay homage to the singers who went before her.
    Gayle Tremble, director of instructor development and learning support, said both performances were wonderful and really kept the attention of the audience.

    Tuesday's luncheon was the final event for Ogeechee Technical College's Black History Month celebration that also included a talent show last week on the school's campus.
